The Westmoreland County Historical Society is the oldest and fastest growing historical society in Westmoreland County. Founded in 1908, the Society is an educational organization dedicated to acquiring and managing resources related to the history of Westmoreland County, and to use these resources to encourage a diverse audience to make connections to the past, develop an understanding of the present, and provide direction for the future.
The Westmoreland County Historical Society In Brief: Founded on December 23, 1908 The Society is the official county historical society for Westmoreland County. The Society is a staff driven 501©3 incorporated non-profit organization registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State as a charitable organization Policy-making for the Society is the responsibility of a 15 member Board of Directors. A paid staff of four, including an Executive Director, Education Coordinator, Staff Assistant, and Librarian, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Society. The Society also employs seasonal, part time help at Historic Hanna’s Town during the summer months. The Society derives its financial support from memberships, various fund-raising events, sales of goods and services, donations, corporate and foundation support, and limited general operating support from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and Westmoreland County. The Society publishes Westmoreland Chronicle, a bi-monthly newsletter and Westmoreland History, a magazine of the county’s history published three times annually. The magazine, a benefit of membership is also sold through Barnes and Noble and other newsstand outlets throughout Westmoreland County. The Society also gifts the magazine to all public and private high school and middle school libraries in the county. The Society’s collections include the Calvin E. Pollins Memorial Library, a 5,000 volume, non-circulating library of local, county, regional and state-wide history works; the Edward H. Hahn Archives, a collection of over 600,000 items that include photographs, diaries, journals, letters, and the papers of individuals and organizations that have played a significant role in shaping the history of Westmoreland County; and a genealogical collection that includes family histories, church records of births, deaths, and marriages, cemetery records, genealogy correspondence, census and tax lists for Westmoreland County and surrounding counties and states. The Society’s collections are open to researchers’. The Historical Society administers Historic Hanna’s Town (the county’s first county seat, 1773-1786) for Westmoreland County. The Society is a member of the Central Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce; the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council; the American Association For State and Local History; the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Official County Historical Societies; the Greensburg Area Cultural Council; and the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau. The Historical Society is a member of the Board of the Smart Growth Partnership of Westmoreland County, and a co-founder and Executive Board member of Westmoreland Heritage, a broad-based community partnership that promotes economic development through heritage tourism in the county.
The Historical Society offices, library and archives are open to the public from:
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Evenings by appointment.
