About Latrobe view map

Latrobe was founded to provide railway yards and maintenance for the Pennsylvania Railroad when it was routed to the west toward Pittsburgh. Scenic environmental beauty and the location of Latrobe along the Pennsylvania Railroad were key factors for the development of a significant industrial hub, rich ethnic heritage, and a notable reputation for being on the threshold of major development. Steeped in history, tradition, education and culture, Latrobe's notoriety comes from being a region of modern industry, recreation, and expanding technology. Latrobe continues to be a flourishing community of progressive citizens and up-to-date services.

My Hometown

By Lesley Flack Yurek
Reprinted with permission.

In the rolling hills of Western PA
We've hidden a wonderful place.
"Only another small town" Is what many say,
But here history has been made on many a day.
Oh, where to begin? There's so many to review,
How 'bout starting with Rolling Rock, that wonderful brew.
The green painted bottle is what most people recall,
Few know the "33" comes from a town quite so small.
And Mister Rogers, he's a well known face
I bet nobody realizes his neighborhood was the same place.
Overnight mail used to be such a fight,
But our invention of airmail set that all right.
Still the list goes on, there's only a few more,
Like the discovery made in Strickler's Drug Store.
Ice cream and bananas what a perfect combination,
Now the entire world enjoys the banana split creation.
Professional football had its start in this spot
Ten dollars and cakes to sweeten the pot.
Of course we can't forget that famous golf pro
Arnold Palmer's his name, this is where he started to grow.
Now here ends my little ode,
My hometown Latrobe, it's right down the road.
